Call of the Wild was painted during the year I was earning my pilot’s license, when my relationship to wilderness, distance, and instinct was changing fundamentally.
The wolf stands alone at night, illuminated by cold moonlight and rimmed with fire from breath and fur catching the air. The snow is not passive — it carries movement, wind, resistance. This is not a portrait of an animal, but a moment of decision.
The call is not answered for survival, but for belonging.
The wolf is not howling in desperation.
It’s calling because it knows where it belongs.
Call of the Wild is about that moment — when you stop negotiating with your nature and answer it.
